COP26 : North Tyneside

This year, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is being hosted by the UK in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November 2021. It will take place against a background of accelerating climate disasters all around the world and it cannot afford to fail.

We are calling on global leaders to make crucial decisions for change to prevent climate chaos – but we can make change at a local level.

“Think global, act local”

This means that we can each play our own part, whether that is reducing travel by car, adjusting the thermostat or recycling more.

We know that not everyone can make these decisions – and that many simply cannot make these changes as they cannot afford to run a car, heat their homes, or buy items to recycle.

That is why we believe that we need social, economic and environmental justice – we cannot pick one above the other – we cannot leave people behind in our communities.

“When we all act together, change is possible”

The actions of individuals alone are not enough. We need businesses and other organisations to play their part in finding a solution to the climate emergency. We cannot afford green-washing.

There are many fantastic businesses around North Tyneside which encourage a Green solution – including eco hubs and zero waste stores. We are proud that our community continues to support these businesses.

Local Government must act as well. Although North Tyneside Council has declared a Climate Emergency – we fear that there is too much talk and too little action from our local leaders.

“There are difficult decisions ahead, but they are necessary.”

North Tyneside Council must lead the way for our region in delivering on Net Zero.

The support must be provided to residents and businesses to facilitate the changes needed. There must be tighter enforcement of regulation, holding polluters to account and making sure that new developments are green.

“Better is possible”

We will continue to offer to work with North Tyneside Council to deliver change – and we will hold our local leaders to account to ensure that Net Zero is delivered.
