We’ve just wrapped up our first ever Green Party campaign in Longbenton and Benton for the by-election following the previous incumbent’s election to Mayor of North Tyneside.
Over a few short weeks, we set out to connect with as many local residents as possible, making sure our candidate, Jim Howard, had a clear and honest understanding of what really matters in the area. From weekly action days and doorstep conversations to being the only candidate to host a public meeting on 24th June, Jim offered something different: the chance to speak directly, ask questions, and share priorities with someone who listens, and who’s free to speak and vote for the community, not just a party line.
This campaign was also part of something bigger. Under the banner of North Tyneside Together, progressive groups rallied around a new way of doing politics — one that puts shared values before party divisions, keeps the far right out of our communities, and leads with hope, not fear. That supportive approach was integral to the campaign’s success.
We’re proud to have run a positive, people-focused campaign that offered a real alternative in an area where many voters told us they were frustrated with mainstream parties — and were voting tactically rather than with conviction. That insight, along with everything we heard while canvassing, gives us a strong foundation to build on for the future.
Although we didn’t win this time, finishing in a strong third place behind Labour and Reform was no small achievement for a first-time campaign. It shows that people here are ready for something better — and greener.
We’ve shown what’s possible in a short time. With more time and support, we know we can go even further. One thing is clear: the future has to be Green.
And we’ll be back.
